Microelectronic Research and Development Center of Iran (MERDCI), an R&D organization set up by Industrial Development and Renovation Organization (IDRO) of Iran, is licensed by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology to engage in R&D activities in the area of microelectronics, nanoelectronics and electronic systems – particularly as it applies to communication networks, systems and technologies. MERDCI’s charter is to utilize available expertise and resources in Iran for promotion of R&D in microelectronics and related areas. As part of its mission, it also helps in development of technical expertise in microelectronics that is needed for development of high technology industries, in general, and communication systems and technologies, in particular.<Br> R&D activities in microelectronics and nanoelectronics areas are conducted in four groups that will be described later in this brochure.
Furthermore, MERDCI’s management philosophy, in accordance with its mission and goals, is to fill the gap between academic research and industry’s needs for high-technology products and services. To achieve this objective, MERDCI has set up a number of application groups to address the needs of the industry in Iran and the region. Each application group is focused on a specific Application line, in accordance with the needs of the market and industry in Iran, and has the capability to offer a wide range of services including consulting services, electronic design (IC1 design, electronic subsystem and system design) as well as research studies. Application groups and their focus areas will be described later in this brochure.
In addition to its R&D and application groups, described below, MERDCI offers educational services in microelectronics and related areas through its Education Department. Educational services include a variety of short courses in microelectronics, nanoelectronics, electronic design automation, and topics involving IC design methodologies in accordance with current best practices. In addition, Educational Department, on occasion, offers workshops and conferences with invited speakers from internationally renowned research institutes and universities. As of January 2006, MERDCI’s Education Department has offered two international workshops in nanoelectronics and one workshop on automotive electronics, both of which were the first such initiatives in Iran. All three events included speakers from the U.S., the Netherlands, Germany and Japan and were attended by members of the academic staff at various universities in Iran and doctoral students in relevant areas of engineering and sciences.
